The Bouzentès lava flow is a 20-m-thick alkali basalt flow emplaced during the last stage of formation of the Cantal stratovolcano at 4.2 Ma. Its upper part has 1- to 20-cm-thick vesicle-rich segregation sheets which recur every 0.1–2 m. These horizontal veins are hawaiitic in composition. They are characterized by hypertrophic development of their minerals (‘pegmatoids’) and by glassy phonolitic segregation vesicles. Internal differentiation within the Bouzentès lava flow was triggered by an unusually high water content, as suggested by pre-emptive iddingsite alteration of olivine phenocrysts. The proposed model of formation of the segregation sheets includes the upward motion of diapirs of residual melt plus addition of vapor from the bottom of the central liquid lens to the base of the upper solidified crust of the cooling lava flow. Olivine settling appears to have been inhibited or at least retarded by upward migration of melt plus vesicles. Most of the features observed in Bouzentès recall the internal differentiation processes usually described within thick Hawaiian lava lakes. The segregation vesicles are believed to result from an increase of gas solubility in residual melt during the crystallization process.  相似文献

A hydrodynamic survey carried out in semiarid southwest Niger revealed an increase in the unconfined ground water reserves of approximately 10% over the last 50 years due to the clearing of native vegetation. Isotopic samplings (3H, 18O, 2H for water and 14C, 13C for the dissolved inorganic carbon) were performed on about 3500 km2 of this silty aquifer to characterize recharge. Stable isotope analyses confirmed the indirect recharge process that had already been shown by hydrodynamic surveys and suggested the tracers are exclusively of atmospheric origin. An analytical model that takes into account the long-term rise in the water table was used to interpret 3H and 14C contents in ground water. The natural, preclearing median annual renewal rate (i.e., recharge as a fraction of the saturated aquifer volume) lies between 0.04% and 0.06%. For representative characteristics of the aquifer (30 m of saturated thickness, porosity between 10% and 25%), this implies a recharge of between 1 and 5 mm/year, which is much lower than the estimates of 20 to 50 mm/year for recent years, obtained using hydrological and hydrodynamic methods and the same aquifer parameters. Our study, therefore, reveals that land clearing in semiarid Niger increased ground water recharge by about one order of magnitude.  相似文献

The presence in the French–Italian Alps of several springs characterized by a high sodium–chloride content, depleted in oxygen-18, tritium free and with low carbon-14 activity, is well known. The geological, hydrological, and geochemical studies in progress for the new high-speed railway tunnel crossing the French–Italian Alps, show, in the drilled boreholes at a mean elevation of 700 masl, the presence of brines. Brines appear to be the basis of the geological, structural, and hydrodynamic systems, and fill the largest faults and the main tectonic contacts. The biomineralization of U(VI) phosphate as a result of microbial phosphatase activity is a promising new bioremediation approach to immobilize uranium in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. In contrast to reduced uranium minerals such as uraninite, uranium phosphate precipitates are not susceptible to changes in oxidation conditions and may represent a long-term sink for uranium in contaminated environments. So far, the biomineralization of U(VI) phosphate has been demonstrated with pure cultures only. In this study, two uranium contaminated soils from the Department of Energy Oak Ridge Field Research Center (ORFRC) were amended with glycerol phosphate as model organophosphate source in small flow-through columns under aerobic conditions to determine whether natural phosphatase activity of indigenous soil bacteria was able to promote the precipitation of uranium(VI) at pH 5.5 and 7.0. High concentrations of phosphate (1-3 mM) were detected in the effluent of these columns at both pH compared to control columns amended with U(VI) only, suggesting that phosphatase-liberating microorganisms were readily stimulated by the organophosphate substrate. Net phosphate production rates were higher in the low pH soil (0.73 ± 0.17 mM d−1) compared to the circumneutral pH soil (0.43 ± 0.31 mM d−1), suggesting that non-specific acid phosphatase activity was expressed constitutively in these soils. A sequential solid-phase extraction scheme and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements were combined to demonstrate that U(VI) was primarily precipitated as uranyl phosphate minerals at low pH, whereas it was mainly adsorbed to iron oxides and partially precipitated as uranyl phosphate at circumneutral pH. These findings suggest that, in the presence of organophosphates, microbial phosphatase activity can contribute to uranium immobilization in both low and circumneutral pH soils through the formation of stable uranyl phosphate minerals.  相似文献

Process identification diagrams based on trace element data show that mafic lavas from Tubuai, including alkali basalts, basanites, analcitites and nephelinites, result from different degrees of partial melting of an isotopically homogeneous mantle source. Our fractionation-corrected data are consistent with a batch melting model or a dynamic melting model involving a threshold value for melt separation close to 1% and degrees of melting ranging from 5–8% (alkali basalts) to 1.5–3% (nephelinites). The relative source concentration pattern, calculated using an inverse numerical method, shows an enrichment in highly incompatible elements. We propose that the Tubuai lava suite was derived from a two-stage partial melting process. Melting first affected the plume material located within the transition zone between garnet and spinel domains, producing alkali basalts and basanites. Then, the melting zone migrated upwards to the base of the overlying spinel-bearing lithospheric mantle, producing highly silica-undersaturated lavas. The lower lithosphere had previously been enriched by intrusion of pyroxenite veins representing plume-derived melts which percolated away from the main magma conduits. In Togo, the hydrogeology of the sedimentary coastal aquifers along the Gulf of Guinea has been studied for the last three decades to define the recharge processes and the origin and evolution of the salinity. Isotope hydrology and fluid geochemistry suggest that the current recharge of all aquifers, both confined and unconfined, occurs through the crystalline basement and the Plio-Quaternary deposits. Two main groundwater mineralization processes are observed: the first one, in recharge areas, is due to farming, village and city life and concerns unconfined aquifers (crystalline basement, Continental Terminal and Quaternary sediments); the second one is a mixing process between recent freshwater and fossil saline water still present in the deep confined aquifers inland, several kilometers away from the coast. Brackish water was trapped in low-permeability lenses of confined aquifers (Eo-Palaeocene and Maastrichtian) during the Quaternary, in periods of low recharge, notably during the last glacial maximum (LGM), and has not yet been flushed out. Hydrodynamic simulations indicate that, at that time, the aquifers experienced a maximum seawater intrusion as far as 20–22 km inland, depending on the palaeo-recharge value at the outcrops.  相似文献
